SUMMER - 2007

Since I had the week of July 30th off, Monica and I decided to paddle up Pitt Lake. This is the largest tidal lake in North America and huge areas of it dry out at low tide. This can be a dangerous lake because sudden winds and shallow waters can create dangerous conditions for small craft. We took our double kayak ( the divorce double) for added safety though it afforded much less storage area for supplies.

It took a few hours to reach Dark Creek Marine Park and the place was empty. We had our choice of three campsites. It is quite a spacious area with a spiffy biffy.

We enjoyed a fine evening and next day set out to explore the lake. The water was an incredible jade green in colour. We saw Artutus trees high up on the bluffs. These groves are remnants of the original ones that existed when the lake was ocean salt water thousands of years ago.

BUNTZEN LAKE

We go to Buntzen Lake about 20 times a year and it has a lot going for it. It is only 20 minutes from home and is a B.C. Hydro Recreation Site. You can rent boats if you like and you unload your canoe right in front of the dock. This lake is fed from a mountain tunnel from Coquitlam Lake and is really our city drinking water - it's clean and clear. Yes, it can be very crowded at the put in site but paddle a few miles to the other end and you can find a small area all to yourself or enjoy the main beach there. It is a city lake but it can be one of the best places around.
